Have you seen all the Back-to-School pictures people have been posting of their kids on social media?

 

Ah, the crisp morning and warm excitement of it all! Remember the first day of school each fall? Were you like me with the new notebooks, sharpened pencils, squeaky-clean shoes, and brushed hair?

 

 

Back-to-School time meant possibilities. Would I make new friends? Would my teacher be nice?

 

By the end of the first week, however, the magic was gone. I realized that school was sometimes fun but usually pretty boring and sometimes plain awful.

 

Just like life.

 

When we get philosophical, we can say things like “the classroom of life.” Ugh. But what do we do with the lessons we learn there? Does it all have to be about self-improvement, learning new skills, and getting better, better, better?

 

I don’t think so.

 

I think the gift of Back-to-School for Grown-Ups is that it can happen anytime…and that the lessons that humble us also soften us if we let ourselves get mad first. Or sad. Or really, really afraid.

 

But we’re usually too busy to let ourselves reflect on the lessons. We just want to ignore it all. We squander away our days with to do lists, chores, and generally “getting on with it.”

 

 

Our adult freedoms give us the opportunity to spend some of our time doing things that nourish our curiosity and build our reserves of joy, but so often we don’t give ourselves this gift. It’s like we don’t deserve to explore, to heal our broken hearts, to play.

 

I’m writing this because I am you.

 

I decided that I wanted to offer classes in “optional” activities because I need them myself. I’m not going to tell you that you need to do yoga every day. I’m not going to tell you that writing will heal you. I’m just going to invite you.

 

Come to one of my upcoming classes because when you hang out in a room with me, you will have time to reflect, to rest, to soften, and to be exactly who you are. Think of it as Back-to-School for Grown-ups.
